For _our_ purposes the patch above fixes the problem and does not kill any of
our test cases. But I don't dare to recomment this for 1.12 release. 
I agree to make the crash to error for 1.12 and than look what we can do with
the changes coming from https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=684790.
