Thanks slomo, that does the job nicely, both on the TTL (though not tested with
Wireshark yet) and the assert fail.

Any chance of a backport to 1.12 branch for the TTL fix? I tried to cherry-pick
it but the conflicts are non-trivial (for me anyway).
