That is true.

However, enough people seem to find it useful enough for a range of
applications with normal usb webcams and such.

Is anyone planning to work on any of these components and redo all of this in a
nicer way?

If not, then perhaps we should just move it, and instead do a camerabin2 and
photography2 interface when the time comes, if it ever comes.

There is such a thing as the perfect being the enemy of the good ;)

(Who would've thought that I'd ever be the one to say that, eh)
