One option to improve the overall performance benefit here would be to support
an overlay format that matches the DVD and PGS input format more closely -
passing overlay regions in a run-length encoded format instead of as arrays of
raw pixels that (for DVD/Bluray at least) are frequently mostly transparent
pixels
