Please could you tell us:

what architecture you are on.
what versions of make, automake, and autoconf you have.
What is at, and around, line 604 of Makefile.

The output of:
uname -a
make --version
automake --version
autoconf --version
head -n 613 Makefile|tail -n 20

Would be helpful.
