I don't like the terms 'filter' or 'effect'.  Generally speaking these
plugins will have the same data type on src and sink, and they just
process/transform the data. So favour a top-level category like:
process
transform
sigproc
dsp
or something like that.  I think I favour dsp since its an accurate
description and its not too general.
