OK, this works now:

./gst-launch { avimux name=mux ! filesink location=/tmp/test.avi } filesrc location=/local/aleader/original/Star_Wars_1.mpg ! mpegdemux name=demux demux.video_00 ! { queue name=vdemux_q ! mpeg2dec ! colorspace ! xvidenc ! queue name=vmux_q ! mux.video_00 } demux.audio_00 ! queue name=audio_q ! mux.audio_00

mplayer can play it if i use the -fps option.  However,
the audio has lots of clicks and pops.  The audio is about
1-2s ahead of the video too.  i'm going to work on fixing
the AVI header and see if things improve.  At least, FPS
looks easy to fix.
