I think its more than a container. Its meant to be an interchange format
to go between various non-linear editors. You could in theory export an
AAF from an Avid suite or Protools and the resulting file will also
contain meta info including the timeline to lay out the media, effects,
parameters, wipes, disolves etc.

Also I think that you can either have media embedded in the file or have
references to external media files.

There is an open source C++ reference implementation on sourceforge.

So if someone out there in GStreamer-land was writing a video editing tool
they should probably evaluate AAF to see if it can be their native storage
format ;)
