You're wrong here, I'm running Gentoo with Gnome2.12, gtk+2.8 (and
glib2.8 with it) fine, glib2.8 is ~x86, but updating from 2.6 (even only
glib) was easy and didn't break things.

echo "=dev-libs/glib-2.8* ~x86" >> /etc/portage/package.keywords
