[gst-devel] aspect ratio correction in playbin

Yes, playbin (well, really the elements it loads) correctly handles the
video aspect ratio.  My guess is you're not setting the
'force-aspect-ratio' property to True on the 'prepare-xwindow-id' message.

What type of video (Theora, MPEG-2, etc.) are you trying to play?
