and AIUI (and as I've experienced), running any OSS app without
LD_PRELOAD hacks, regardless of mmap stuff, means that oss-emulation
steals the ALSA hardware device, and dmix can't get a look in. 

ie, effectively OSS emulation still means that any OSS app blocks all
other users.
