Give us some code we can run so we can check.

Yes.

Try

 gst-launch fdsrc fd=1 ! fdsink fd=2

and type some stuff.  This should tell you that something is working.

One particular caveat is that I think you have to set the fd on fdsrc
before it goes to PAUSED.
