Why does adding ! audiorate screw up audio?

Hi,
   I am looking for an ideal value of tolerance in "audiorate" element. I
used value 40000 and it worked for some clips/input audio formats but for
some it fails in some other cases and i need to put a much higher tolerance
value something ~10000000 to get them working. Is there a formula for
selecting tolerance in audiorate ??
