Running "pulseaudio" and "alsa" together.

One (rather confusing) query ::
Let "x" be the default-sink (as given by "pactl stat").
a)
When I do
pactl set-sink-mute "x" 0/1
pavucontrol shows the mute status for "Output Devices" appropriately.
b)
However, when I do
pactl set-sink-volume "x" 100
the volume in "Output Devices" goes down to 0 !!!!! (even though it is
non-zero before running this command).
What stupidity am I committing?

Ajay
