adding gstreamer plugins to Mplayer/Totem player in ubuntu

Hi,

please tell the way in which how to add our own gstreamer plugins to
Mplayer/Totem player.

do we need to change any source code of players? or is it enough to simply
add the .so file in the Gstreamer plugin path?
