More than three daemons?

Some more information:  the problem only happens on my embedded system
(Gumstix) and not when I run everything on a PC (i.e. instead of plugging
the three encoders into my Gumstix and running the daemons there, I plug
everything into my Linux PC and run my daemons on the PC.)
