How exactly does it fail? What happens if you run
gst-launch-1.0 playbin uri=file:///path/to/file
?

If you use the Debian packages for 1.0, you should be able to play the
file after having GStreamer plugins base/good/bad/ugly installed.
gst-libav additionally can't hurt but shouldn't be required.
