Can state change and create_read occur simultaneously in src plugin

Hi All,

I have gone through posts but not getting clear Idea about below query:-

Consider a src plugin (supporting both push/pull). In case i have a shared
variable to be updated in change_state() and in create_read() call [Does
explicit locking required to protect the shared variable] 
Can the src plugin's change_state() and create_read() call occur
simultaneously while the case of PAUSED->PLAYING or PLAYING->PAUSED ?

Note:- GStreamer 0.10.36
