Multiple versions of GStreamer

I was finally able to get 1.3 compiled, but my system still wants to use the previously installed 1.2 library. How do I force it to use a particular version of GStreamer present on my machine?

Alternatively, how do I remove 1.2 and put 1.3 in the right place to be found? (Ubuntu 13.10)
