Does avdec_vp8 use the VPU in IMX 6 ?

No, it uses libav/ffmpeg's software decoder for VP8.

This GStreamer plugin here is able to use the VPU for various tasks
like decoding: https://github.com/Freescale/gstreamer-imx/
