Simplest way to define if a URI leads to an Audio or Video file?

I came to the point to find out if a link is playable with the Discoverer.
Now the tutorial Meda Information Gathering
<http://docs.gstreamer.com/display/GstSDK/Basic+tutorial+9%3A+Media+information+gathering>
seems too much code with too many functions to me.

I need a simple way to define if a URI (either file or web url) leads to an
audio or video file. I need to distinguish between the two.

Is there such way?
