pygst blocking

I'm moving an application from gstreamer 1.4 to 1.12 because 1.4 had a
vicious memory leak when playing multiple video files.

In any case, with 1.12, I find that events from buttons on my overlay are
not received until the current video is complete.  As if its not being
threaded.

Any ideas?
