ERROR: gobject-introspection dependency was not found, gir cannot be generated.

I have tried to build from gstreamer using the meson build instructions
but when I run meson build/ I get the following:
subprojects/gstreamer/gst/meson.build:273:4: ERROR: gobject-introspection
dependency was not found, gir cannot be generated.
