Detecting video playback underflow in the application.

Hi there

I was wondering what's the correct way for the application to detect an
underflow.
For example, let's say we have a DASH pipeline and for some reason decoder
is
starved of data. How will the application know that?

I know of QOS events and messages but the latter aren't extensively
supported in adaptivedemux
and the former seem quite limited in what they convey to the application.

So how do I do it "by the book"?
