[patch] asynchronous callouts

Btw, I forgot to mention that it now works perfectly for me with both
patches. But perhaps we should change the callout code so only files
with a ".hal" suffix is executed; I tend to forget to remove the backup
file from emacs, so both foo.sh and foo.sh~ is executed :-)
