hal (or g-v-m) issues ?

You need to be in the plugdev group now, so you are allowed to mount removable
devices without an fstab entry.

Check if gphoto2 --auto-detect shows the camera.  I guess g-v-m is doing the
right thing, but it can't know beforehand if gthumb will find it...

It would probably be better if you put bugs into the debian BTS. Most people on
the mailinglist won't know what changed in debian last week anyway.
