hal, cdrom and gvm

I'm trying to get gnome-volume-manager to work, though it doesn't seem
that hal is sending any media insert notifications to gvm.  My other
removable devices work fine (usb keydrive, etc).  Just the cdrom doesn't
work.  Anyone have any ideas on how to debug this? (I'm a developer, I'm
just new to hal).  Thanks!
