It sure would but it requires some work. The Linux 2.6 backend is about
10k LOC, however I think it's very possible to do this on Solaris given
that Solaris got the right kernel interfaces (as a data point Linux 2.4
don't really have the right interfaces).

This dependency is optional, e.g. if hal is not there gnome-vfs will
resort to the /etc/fstab and /etc/mtab reading (IIRC it's even called
something different on at least Solaris 8). If it's not optional it's a
bug.
