How to configure mount options for autodetected drives?

Hello,

I'm not sure if this is the correct list for this question, but
it seems a good place to start. Please refer me if there is a
better list.

My question is how/where to configure additional mount options
for drives which are auotdetected and automatically mounted.  For
example, when I insert a VFAT-formatted USB flash drive, I would like
to add the mount option "shortname=mixed" to the options which
are automatically generated.  Is there a configuration file
where this can be done?
