Here is another option.  I am writing this stupid simple python-gtk app
to help with creating dbus rules for "out of tree" hardware.  My
roommate and I use Creative Zen's and I have a Zen Micro, which kind of
drove me to this.  

Adding custom Hal fdi's and giving the option to upload them would
probably be relatively easy.  I haven't looked too deeply into that part
of Hal (Sorry I have been knee deep in gnome-vfs storage handling stuff
I don't like).

What do you all think of a gui utility like this?  Something to make it
easy for random user X to easily point and click their way to USB
installation or bug reporting.
