need for GDL

hi ppl,
 i am doin some research on hal, and i though this was the right place to
discuss on the implementation of hal..

I was just investigating on the need for a GDL to be maintained by hal... Is
there any application that uses this GDL created by hal, or is it for its
own needs.. Also, there are many properties that are stored by hal but never
seem to be used..

I tried looking at the specs and the code but the dint seem to help much..
