Mount external HD read only

Hello,

I hope this is the right list to ask as I could not find a solution with Google. I have running SuSE 9.3 and the external firewire HDs are mounted automatically without problems. But for data safety reasons I would like them to be mounted read only. Is it possible to change the policies so that this is achieved?
