Problems with hald-addon-storage

I am having some serious problems with cd-burning which I have traced to
hald-addon-storage.

If I insert a blank cd-r or cd-rw in my scsi Plextor cd-r/w drive then
a series of very nasty kernel error messages are produced and burning is
impossible. Sometimes a hard kernel lockup occurs.

This is in gnome or kde with hal running. These messages disappear if I
kill the appropriate hald-addon-storage daemon.

If I use the console (init 1) instead of the desktop then hal no longer
runs and I am able to happily burn and blank without any kernel errors
using cdrecord.

I am running Ubuntu 6.04 (development branch) with gnome 2.13 and the
Ubuntu 2.6.15-15 kernel.

The drive is CD-R PX-W4012S (Plextor) on an Adaptec ASC-39320A U320 scsi
adaptor.

Any information on how to discover whether this is a hal bug or a kernel
bug would be gratefully received....

I have done an strace on hald-addon-storage and more details can be
found here:
