I also use this automake version, but I never get this error for 'make 
distcheck' and also not within our (currently paranoid) build system. So this 
is maybe a other problem with FC and not in general (was there something 
changed in FC?).

Was this '\' on a new line or only a mail-linebreak?

I also never used it, but there is IMO a reason for this. Maybe David could 
say more.
