Some day, in 10,000 years and probably in a galaxy far far away, X.org
will stop using e.g. /dev/input/mice and the desktop session tell the X
server what devices to use.

(Stuff like this is required for user configurable stuff (think the
Input dialogs on Mac OS X) like disabling the touchpoint in and around
when you use your keyboard. Stuff like that. The whole idea of exposing
input devices in HAL is to make it easy to write desktop session daemon
for handling this).
