newbie here...about devices attaching and removing

hi all,

am a newbie here,but i have read about hal and udev.i want to get notified
whenever a usb device is attached - whether it is USB Mass Storage,USB
Camera,USB Printer etc.,A gui window should popup and inform the user.I want
to implement as given in this page http://www.ometer.com/hardware.html and i
think first step is to do as i have stated above.

i would be happy if people could help me.
