Yes, you are probably right. We really do need to figure out when we
break API/ABI because it's something I want before we can go to 1.0. And
when we do break stuff we'd better 1) make it very obvious that it
breaks; and 2) make it as easy as possible to transition to the new
API/ABI. I think that's possible.

Anyway, I still think there's a lot of stuff we can fix, and that we
need to fix, before breakage happens. Things like getting Solaris and
FreeBSD support is part of that (optimizing is another; still haven't
forgot Kay's patches) and so far it looks like we can do this without
breaking anything.
