Yes. You shouldn't be able to do it if X is active - vbetool checks that
the console is "text mode" (which is true for framebuffers, but not for
X)

Yeah, I don't understand it either. And since understanding it would
require understanding Intel's BIOS, I'm happy to keep it at arm's
length. There's nothing stopping an application from querying hal during
boot and using that information to decide whether to save the state.
