Let's wait and see what Holger says. I can't, however, seem to think why
we shouldn't be doing something like this on HEAD - it's just delayed
error handling, nothing less, nothing more. 

But, as a matter of project openness and getting more eyeballs on the
proposed idea, I'd like to get broad acceptance from all parties before
putting it in 0.5.9 (or 0.6.0 or what we'll end up calling the next
version).
