i just checked the situation and seems like its a cdrecord problem (so i'm 
cc'ing Joerg Schilling) and if im not wrong utf8 stream in utf16 is not 
valid. 

I wrote the same CD with same label on windows using Nero and resulting CD can 
be mounted by hal and its label is pure UTF-8
