First off: I'm glad you managed to make sense of that sentence. I must

I don't understand why you're so much against having this stuff in HAL.
It IS a hardware abstraction issue. HAL is supposed to provide an
abstraction layer between the hardware itself and anything that wants to
know general stuff about hardware.
Right now, the only technology I know of that provides this kind of
information is S.M.A.R.T, but others might show up or perhaps already be
present on other platforms. I don't know. I'd say it'd be a major
advantage if applications could just check one place for this kind of
information, and we (hal) could aggregate the information the different
sources of information.
