HAL doesn't show root partition as mounted?

linux.fstab.* is not part of HAL; probably vendor patches - what distro
are you running? And what's the version of HAL etc.? You really need to
provide this kind of information if you expect to get help. Either way,
it's probably your initramfs / distro who are screwing up, see
