I am using version 0.5.8.1 that comes with Ubuntu feisty.
Thanks for the patch.

If I use this patch and recompile HAL, and then use the introspection
XML result to generate a Java interface for my application, will the
app work in other machines (probably with the same HAL version) if I
redistribute it?

(Or is there an another way to get notifications on usb storage
insertion, without registering to the signals from the HAL Manager?)
