weird error message

When I tried to start up Gnome Power Manager I got this error message:
(gnome-power-manager:6588): GnomeUI-WARNING **: While connecting to
session manager:
Authentication Rejected, reason : None of the authentication protocols
specified are supported and host-based authentication failed.

System is Ubuntu edgy (6.10) on a new Dell D420 (yet Richard, I have
finally bought a new computer without the words defect on it)
Gnome is running Compiz.
