Ok, I think it could be clarified simply by completing the first sentence:
"Note that certain interfaces will also check whether other locks are being 
held on other device objects or interfaces."

I guess that's what confused me in the first place. I previouly understood it 
as "it checks other locks on other objects, but not other interfaces on the 
same object".
