The patch was done following the example of e.g. scanners
and PTP cameras. Most audio devices that are not USB mass
storage use the raw device nodes from userland to access the
device via libusb. e.g. libnjb, libmtp.

Perhaps it should be possible to target a smaller subset of the
device range? portable_audio_player is a bit coarse.

Correct, we have this new way of trying to avoid PAM hacks to
set permissions on device nodes in Fedora:
