And Matthew has hit the nail on the head - our current approach just doesn't, 
and won't, ever scale (certainly, it won't for the Acer case).

Of all the Acer users out there, only a fraction use Linux. Of that, only an 
even smaller fraction ever both to report back that keys don't work _and_ 
provide the necessary information (or I go trawling the net for people to 
provide me with that information). It means we're only ending up with a tiny 
fraction of the available Acer laptops properly mapped. That's the reason 
we're not getting a level of reports that is equal to the number of laptops 
out there.

So, at least from my perspective, a tiny amount of extra memory lost and 
mapping a few extra keys vs getting nearly every key working on all Acer 
laptops in one fell swoop isn't much of a discussion at all - I favour the 
latter.
