Fixing Debian bug #418176 in 0.5.8.1

Hello :)

In Debian, we have the bug 
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=418176 which prevents 
desktop users from mounting NTFS filesystems which are in removable devices.

I the intension to make Debian better for desktop users, I want to solve this 
problem in the current stable distribution, in the next "point release". In 
order to allow this to happen, I will need a fixed, patched version of the 
HAL that is packaged in the stable distribution. So my question is, will it 
be possible to make a patch against the 0.5.8.1 version of hal that fixes 
this bug?
