Actually, I had hoped to have a solution for my problem from your thread.

I'm using the stock kernel, which I believe has evdev.

When X starts up, I have no keyboard or mouse. If I plug in a USB 
keyboard it works fine and kickstarts the PS2 keyboard and USB mouse.

It's very odd.
