Hi Dieter,
my experience is that as long as I use the Suse-kernel, non-root users
need NOT to be group members of "audio".
Once I start using my own kernel, I have to add all users to the group
"audio" in order to have sound working.
My impression is that the Suse-kernel is patched with respect to
"permissions", perhaps for security issues (just guessing).
